Mathematics is often described as a fundamental discipline of science and engineering, and it provides descriptive language for current research in those fields. With a long history and a promising future, mathematics remains a dynamic field that continues to grow at a rapid rate.
We pride ourselves on maintaining an outstanding
mathematics program. In fact, the Department of Mathematics at Hokkaido
University, has been ranked among the world's top research institutions in
an external review.
The department also covers wide-ranging research areas, from
pure mathematics to various applied mathematics, including an area
known as mathematical science. This is reflected in the faculty research
interests you see on our website.
In the hope of making direct contribution to other disciplines of
science through our diverse activities, we are setting up the
Mathematical Center for Advanced Study, designed to promote
interdisciplinary research interactions as part of the
initiatives for
our 21century COE program.
The center in particular seeks to provide the
synergic effects of crossdisciplinary research activities at Hokkaido
University; it matches researchers interested in
particular mathematical problems with mathematicians in our
department who may be able to offer
proper assistance.
We are also planning to organize research seminars
and forums that connect mathematics and other scientific fields.
