There are variational problems with solutions discontinuous along curves which are themselves among the unknowns of the problems. Problems of this kind, called by De Giorgi variational problems with free discontinuities, arise in Computer Vision. The prototype of free discontinuity problem is the Mumford-Shah functional. In this talk I will focus on variational multiphase piecewise constant image segmentation, and present recent developments, including the piecewise constant level set method (PCLSM), which is closely related to the gradient theory of phase transition.
