We are interested in the pattern formation in reaction-diffusion systems ofactivator-inhibitor type. Typical examples are FitzHugh Nagumo type systems. As pointed out in the recent works of Yanagida, such systems possess askew-gradient structure and calculus of variations is one of useful tools inthe study of existence of steady states and other types of solutions. We will discuss the roles of relative Morse index and Maslov index playedin the stability analysis.
