Excitable media support self-organized scroll waves which can beunstable and give rise to three-dimensional waves chaos. Winfreeturbulence of scroll waves results from the negative filament tensioninstability of scroll waves; it plays an important role in the cardiactissue where it may lead to ventricular fibrillation. By numericalsimulations we show that it may be observed in the Belousov Zhabotinskyreaction and in models of cardiac tissue under conditions of weakexcitability. A relationship between the negative tension ofthree-dimensional scroll waves and the meandering behaviour oftwo-dimensional spiral waves is found. The application of globalperiodic forcing to control such turbulence is discussed.
