 We establish a quantitative approximation of the Lyapunov exponents of a rational function of degree more than one over more general fields than complex numbers, in terms of the multipliers of nonsuperattracting periodic points of the rational function. The proof is based on a variational characterization of the canonical measure of a rational function using a potential theory on the Berkovich projective line.
