In 1929, "amenability" for groups was introduced by von Neumann
to understand the Banach-Tarski paradox and now it is known as one of the
most successful notion in mathematics.
Every closed subgroup of an amenable locally compact group is again amenable.
This property, however, is not true for non-locally compact groups in
general.
A typical counterexample is the unitary group on an infinite dimensional
Hilbert space which is amenable but contains a lot of non-amenable
subgroups.
In the seminar, I will talk about discrete subgroups of certain amenable
SIN-groups, they should be amenable.
