In this talk, I give an introductory lecture on von Nemann algebras for young students and non-specialists. Von Neumann algebra'' is a subalgebra of the algebra of all bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space. The only preliminary knowledge is a basic of functional analysis, more specifically, Banach spaces and Hilbert spaces.

In the first half of the lecture, I focus on fundamental issues on von Neumann algebra theory. I then introduce recent development of von Neumann algebra theory, which is now called deformation/rigidity theory''.

In the second half, I talk my recent work on the deformation/rigidity theory. I recently studied tensor products of some von Neumann algebras, which behave like prime numbers and prime decomposition''. This is also for non-specialists.
